Average review score:

DYNAMIC RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIPTHIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK, IT UNFOLDS THE TRUE HISTORY OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. IT DEALS WITH THE MULTITUDE OF DISTORTION AND HOW AFRICAN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WRITTEN OUT OF HISTORY. CAUSE OF SLAVERY, RACISM AND WHITE SUPREMIST PROPAGANDA. HE DEALS WITH ETHIOPIA AND THE ORIGIN OF CIVILIZATION, SHOWING HOW THE FIRST HUMAN BEING ERECTED FROM AFRICA. SO IF AFRICA GAVE BIRTH TO MANKIND THEN IT IS LOGICAL TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT AFRICA GAVE BIRTH TO CIVILIZATION. HE TALKS ABOUT ETHIOPIA, ANCIENT EGYPT, AND NUBIA, GHANA, MALI, SONGHAY, MONOMOTOPA, AND ECT. HE SYSTEMATICAL SHOWS HOW AFRICANS EVEN ENGAGED IN SEA VOYAGES WITH AMPLE PROOF AND EVIDENCE. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT, OBJECTIVE AND WELL ROUNDED BOOK.
BrilliantThis is the most excellent and comprehensive book dealing with African Civilizations as a whole to date. He spans the entire continent, using a time frame that spans to the beginning of civilization, and completely disembowels the Eurocentric view of the black culture.
African History 201A textbook-style study which challenges European historians. Details ancient Ethiopia, Egypt, the Moors, West, Central, and Southern Africa. An occasionally difficult, but excellent and comprehensive study. I consider this the foremost work in African history - it is for the serious student. For somewhat less comprehensive, but easier reads, look for J.A. Rogers, Chancellor Williams, Ivan Van Sertima, all whom have produced excellent works.

Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch
Published in Hardcover by Running Press (June, 1997)
Average review score:

The Best of Its KindEchoing the other reviews posted here, I'd just like to add that this book is one of the best of its kind. Unlike a lot of books about scotch whisky which tell you loads about the distilliries yet nothing about the relative worth of the drams, this book calls 'em--the good, the mediocore, and the not so good. Mr. Jackson is an outstanding writer, by turns witty and intelligent, and his passion for scotch is evident and infectious. The beautiful layout work complements the writing.
If you have even a passing interest in single malts, you need this book. Buy it now. And don't let your friends swipe your copy, even though they'll want to.
I love this book!If you love single malt whisky, you'll love this book. As a single malt lover, I use this book as a guide to explore the world of single malt whisky. Since I am stiil young and poor, it's not possible to taist too much whisky. You have to make a purchasing list for yourself. I am very happy to find out that this books can help me make the decision. I am not saying the point is everything. If you beleve your own taist, you do not have to agree with the author's comment. However, it's a way to build your own guide step by step. Until now, I have tried about 10 brands with about 30 different ages scotch. It's really an interesting world.
AuthoritativeJackson's book is the best of the lot. He brings a love of fine whisky to bear with no pre-established perceptions. Kyle Wallace

Three years later....I am the one who wrote the review...three long years ago! I am still reading, enjoying, and gaining new insights from this book! I have doubled my income many, many times as a result, and I look forward to a future of even more prosperity! The principles are deceptively simple, but try them out and you will be pleased with the results! You have nothing to lose...but your unhappiness.
GREAT BENEFITIf you suffer any financial problems and you feel that there is no way of pulling yourself out of these problems, then i will recommend this book highly to be read. If reading it did not change your situation, then at lease it will give a hope and an inspiratin and defenitely you will look at the things from a very optimistic angle. The theory of the book is very logical and convincing and makes you think how life is simple. This book for sure gives you the courage, confident, inspiration and the well to change things on you or around you to something you have always dreamed of.
You will not be sorryThis book is truly a wonderful book. Such a easy read and anyone who has read it will tell you that they wish they would have read it sooner. People will say that the book worked for them over and over again. It has for me. My salary has gone up by forty percent by reading this book. I own my own business and since reading it our sales have gone from $275K-$325 to $450K. When my business took a turn for the worst this book (stonecutter) picked me up and put me back on the right track.
This book will not tell you how to get rich QUICK. It will tell you simply how to obtain wealth. Pick it up, read it and you will never be sorry you did.

Chelsea Clinton's Freshman Notebook: A Parody
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (Adult Trd Pap) (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Now THIS is comedyA clever, funny, well-done look at college life for the first daughter. Lots of good stuff here, and the authors get the details of college life --and the Clintons -- exactly right. I especially liked learning that Chelsea Clinton rearranged spells "Hells acne tonic" and the picture of Chelsea roasting that porker Newt Gingrich. Highly recommended ...............
A treasure to mankind! Amazingly indepth and Hilarious! When we, my wife and I, first read this book, we couldn't sleep for days because we were laughing so darn hard! I mean, chelsea's first year, filled with her triumphs - and numerous catastrophes - are narrated with the utmost ability. Mr. Eaton brings a new comedic twist to the classic humor/parody book. I wouldn't be very surprised if Mr. Eaton doesn't become the next Matt Groening - giving us a dose of reality in his quite comedic world! Two thumps up...four if you count my wife Mindy's!
A good light read!I loved the illustrations! It was well thought out and executed . . . as well as being very, very funny! Not for Clintonistas.

I Just Forgot (A Little Critter Book)
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (August, 1999)
Average review score:

Everyone forgets sometimesThis was a funny book. It reminded me a lot of myself and how I leave things on or don't put them away on accident. Another part that reminded me of how I am is how little critter said they didn't forget to close the refridgerator he was just not done eating. I always leave the t.v. on in a room and come back to it because I'm still watching it. This book I think was made to say that you never forget the important things and the things that really matter. It also lets kids know that everyone is forgetful.
Good ReadThis book taught kids it's ok to forget somethings in life, but it also teaches them they cannot forget a lot of things, like how much they love their parents. but if you forget minor things like washing the dishes it's ok. I enjoy reading Mercer Mayer books, he can really connect with kids and get on their level, I think kids pick up on the morals. You may get into trouble if you forget things, but all kids do..
I just forgotThis book explains to children that it is ok to forget things sometimes most all kids do. But like in the book most kids never forget who or what is most important to them. This book reminds me of me and my brother because we always forget to do our chores but we never forget to tell our parents we love them and tell them goodnight.

River Where Blood Is Born
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (September, 1997)
Average review score:

ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT STORIES EVER TOLDI feel so strongly about the power of this book that I do not even know where to begin. I read it for the first time as a Senior in highschool. I am now a Junior at Spelman College and have since read many more books by far more famous authors and I must say that none of them have come close to the lyrical beauty, and magically woven story of The River Where Blood is Born. It is the most prized book in my collection, and if I could give it ten stars I would. It is the story of nine generations of women whose ancestry begins in Africa. The author traces the lineage from before the slave trade, through abolition, the turbulent civil rights and 70s era, on to present day. The beauty is that through such an expansive period of time the story maintains it's connectiveness from the first ancestor to the last offspring such that the reader has a lasting sense of where it all began. It is not just a book for women nor for African-Americans. It is a book for anyone who has ever wished to understand and feel a connection to their past. For the patient and open minded reader it will prove to be a most rewarding experience. I hope you decide to read it, there is no doubt you will enjoy!
Totally absorbingI borrowed this book from a friend and didn't want to return it. It was terrific! It traces the history of nine generations of women from Africa, to the Caribbean, to America and back to Africa again. The characters are vividly portrayed and believable. The story is readable and the connections between the female characters are fascinating. African folklore and myth are incorporated into the book in a fascinating and relevant manner. My only gripe is a minor one -- some of the women's story lines weren't as fully developed as I would have liked. But that did not in anyway detract from the power of the narrative.
A fantastic, thoughtful engaging read.Ms. Jackson-Opoku's novel is a wonderful weaving of history and women's lives in the temporal and spiritual worlds. Once I accepted Anansi as a figure beyond the children's book, I was hooked. The characters are so familiar that you want to invite them into your own life, then you realize, they're already there.

The Bark of the Dogwood: A Tour of Southern Homes and Gardens
Published in Hardcover by Enolam Group (May, 2002)
Average review score:

So many levels, so little timeThis book can be read on so many levels that it's hard to know where to start. First off, it's a great story. Secondly, for those into metaphor, it's a feast for the senses. The descriptions, characterizations, and surprises in plot are excellent and while I was skeptical about the length, the time just flew by. The most fascinating aspect of the book is the fact that the laugh-out-loud funny scenes in the first half are explained to us the second half--what is really behind the humor. It has been said that all humor comes out of pain, and if anyone is looking for a confirmation of this fact, look no further than this book. Along with ATONEMENT and EMPIRE FALLS this is one of my favorites.
A compelling tale of the recesses of the human psycheJackson Tippett McCrae's The Bark Of The Dogwood: A Tour Of Southern Homes And Gardens is a thoroughly engaging novel about Strekfus Beltzenschmidt, a Southern man living in New York City, and carrying a hazy past filled with fractured memories. Strekfus' quest to find the intellectual and emotional truth about himself and his personal history is a highly recommended and compelling tale of the recesses of the human psyche and cultural roots.
Laugh out loud funny and heartfelt work of geniusThis book actually changed my life. I look at everyone around me differently now and I'm much more aware of my actions and how they affect others. While it wasn't meant to be a "self-help" book, it did just that. Not only did I get a great story, well-written fiction, and a lot of laughs, but I actually came away from the reading experience changed. This is going on the Christmas list as a gift to give.

Cinder Edna
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Clever but hard to read aloud... This is a great book-- the message is not feminist. ...[It's]about making your dreams come true versus waiting around for them to come true; about being sensible rather than trying to live a fairy tale. While Cinderella gets lucky, Cinder Edna makes her own luck. Cinderella cries at her misfortune and dreams of a prince to save her, but Cinder Edna makes lemonade out of her lemons, and also gets a prince.
The book is a little long for the younger set-- my four-year-old can barely sit through it unless I read it fast, hence the one objection I have about pronouncing "Cinder Edna".
Absolutely hysterical, but can be hard to understandI am a teacher, and I bought this book for my 3rd grade class when we were doing a unit on Cinderella. This is a fabulous take on the classic story, updated wonderfully. But some of the ideas had to be explained to my children because it was a lot to take in. They didn't get some of the jokes. In the end, I think that most of them got the general idea. The moral is a great lesson for kids these days.
great bookThis wonderful and funny version of the Cinderella story is about a girl with spunk, imagination and drive. She ends up happier than the girl who is pretty, but dependent and needy. It's a must-read for every young girl. I bought one for all my daughter, the school library and my friends' little girls.
